The water level in Tissø – as well as other surface water – is regulated here and sent to Kalundborg’s industry as process and cooling water via Kalundborg Vandforsyning.
In 1883, they chose to deepen the drainage from Tissø to Nedre Halleby Stream to create good grazing areas around Tissø and to carry out peat excavation inside Store Åmose. The consequence was that the deepened river lowered the water level in Tissø so much that parts of the lake dried up. In 1889, the first weir was built.
The regulation of the water level in Tissø was changed when Kalundborg Vandforsyning received permission to increase the water extraction from Tissø in 2001.
Covservation and renovation
WINTEC rebuilt the existing weir in 2002 to ensure optimal water level in Tissø, where a fauna passage was also established in this connection.
The gate in the weir is connected to 2 water level meters in Tissø. The gate is adjusted up and down according to the prevailing water level. This is done by including specific sighting points in the main station. These are compared with the prevailing mean water level of the lake. If the water level is above the sighting point, the main station sends a message to the weir to raise the gate. In case of the opposite, the gate remains closed. The gate is adjusted 6 cm at a time.
Climate change means that Kalundborg Municipality must decide by 2020 on a new and improved dam to better regulate the rising water level in Tissø.
